Dataminr was founded in 2009 by Yale University graduates Ted Bailey, Sam Hendel and Jeff Kinsey. Dataminr employs over 600 people, and their clients span both public and private sectors, including CNN, USA Today, the United Nations, Airbus, Shell, the New York City Office of Emergency Management and some of the largest Hedge Funds in the world. The company ranked #5 on the Forbes AI 50 List in 2019 and was the winner of a 2019 AI Breakthrough Award for Best Overall AI Solution. In 2020, Dataminr was named to Forbes Cloud 100, and Deloitte Technology Fast 500 and ‘Most Innovative Use of AI’ at the 2020 AI & Machine Learning Awards.
In 2018, Dataminr closed a $391.6 million Series E round of funding that valued the company at $1.6 billion. Investors included Morgan Stanley, Valor Equity Partners, Vulcan Capital, the Pritzker Family, Fidelity Investments and Goldman Sachs. The company has raised $577 million in funding to date. In April 2020 Dataminr won a potential five-year, $258.6M contract from the U.S. Air Force to develop a commercially available platform that can send alerts to users in real time through mobile, email and web-based applications.
